Why Fatigue Is a Serious Safety Hazard

Tiredness is one of the most underestimated dangers on the road. Unlike a visible hazard such as ice or fog, fatigue is invisible to other drivers and frequently invisible to the fatigued driver themselves. The brain tends to underestimate its own level of impairment as exhaustion deepens — making it uniquely difficult to self-diagnose in the moment.

  • Frequent yawning or eye-rubbing — your brain is signalling oxygen and stimulation deficits.
  • Heavy, burning, or difficult-to-focus eyes — a direct sign of reduced neural arousal.

Plan Rest Stops Before You Need Them

Map out rest stops or service areas at two-hour intervals before you start a long drive, and commit to stopping at each one regardless of how you feel.   • Prior sleep debt — even one night of less than 7 hours meaningfully affects the following day's driving performance.

What to Do When You Feel Fatigued
