Close your eyes. Now, think of a Jeep. You’re probably thinking about the Wrangler. But, did you know that the Grand Cherokee is every bit as impressive as the off-road brand, in terms of sales?
The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s appeal is focused on the fact that it has an impressive off-road capability with on-road refinement. The car also offers a range of luxury features and has that rugged, outdoorsy look that Jeep buyers love.
This car has V-6 and V-8 engine options and a plug-in-hybrid variant that Jeep calls 4xe. While rear-wheel drive is the standard option on models with the V-6, there are over three different all-wheel-drive systems to help tackle whatever your lifestyle requires.
What’s new for 2022?
The 2022 model sheds its old frame by introducing a two-row body style structure. Yet, Jeep is still selling previous generations of Grand Cherokee WK through the 2022 model year. The Grand Cherokee is priced thousands higher than competitors such as the Hyundai Palisade and the Kia Telluride. That’s one drawback to think about.
Engine, transmission, and performance
The Grand Cherokee has a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. The company also offers a plug-in hybrid that adds electrification to its family SUV. A rear-wheel drive is standard with a base of V-6. During test drives, the Grand Cherokee’s drive was composed and smooth. The V-6–powered Summit test car covered a 7.4-second run to 60 mph.
Fuel economy and real-world MPG
The Grand Cherokee’s fuel economy is typical, at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway when used with rear-wheel drive. Adding an all-wheel drive drops those estimates by one mpg. The V-8 model is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Interior, comfort, and cargo
A modernized cabin replaces the outgoing Cherokee’s dated interior. While base Laredo models provide the essentials, upscale Summit and Overland options will add luxuries like open-pore wood trim, quilted leather upholstery, and high-tech digital displays. The Grand Cherokee is precisely a two-row SUV. Yet, buyers seeking the third row have the option to upgrade to the Grand Cherokee L.
Infotainment and connectivity
An 8.4- or 10.1-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM satellite radio floats above the surface of the Cherokee’s dashboard. The in-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather alerts is optional. Higher-end models can be upgraded with a 10.0-inch head-up display, a digital gauge cluster, and another 10.3-inch display that can be embedded into the dashboard.
