For over three decades, the Toyota Camry has been a bestseller in the midsize segment. A few years ago, it was thoroughly redesigned with the aim of improving its ride, handling, and styling. The result? It now offers a four-cylinder, a V6, and a hybrid powertrain option and promising levels of safety and reliability.
For the first time, you can also choose between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models. It’s simply the best four-door sedan to buy if you like keeping a low profile.
It’s important to note that all-wheel-drive is an option on LE trim levels and above only on four-cylinder models.
There’s even a TRD model aimed at enthusiasts that’s stiffer and more responsive, with better brakes. The transmission tuning and steering feel could use some work, though.
Performance
The base engine is a four-cylinder that generates about 204hp, and the V6 churns out 301hp. Both are mated to a smooth eight-speed auto transmission. With the hybrid, the base engine is paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 208hp. The base ICE model returns 28/39mpg on city/highway runs, the V6 delivers 22/32mpg, and the hybrid is rated for a maximum of 51/53mpg. Pick the engine that suits your needs best.
Safety
The Toyota Camry receives a ‘Good’ score in all categories and is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The lower trim model with non-adaptive LED headlights scores an ‘Acceptable.’ The Camry received a front crash prevention designation of ‘Superior’ by avoiding collisions on the low-speed and high-speed autobrake tests.
NHTSA awarded the Camry a five-star overall safety rating too. This is because every Camry gets the Toyota Safety Sense System as standard. It includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims get a blind spot monitor with rear-cross traffic alert as well.
Space
There’s enough room in the Camry for five. There’s a generous amount of front and rear legroom as well. The base Camry L features 60/40 folding rear seats and has 14.1 cubic feet of trunk space. All other versions have 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space.
Overall, the Camry has a light, rigid chassis and top-notch safety rating. It has always been and continues to be an extremely reliable means of transportation.
