Everything You Should Know About Buying a Pre-Owned Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is one of the most renowned names in the automotive industry. Over the years, this car has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe, and hatchback. A used seventh or eighth-generation Accord is a good option for people with a modest budget. Here’s what you should know about buying a pre-owned Accord.

Seventh generation (2003-2007)

The seventh-generation Accord had a bigger size and better horsepower than its predecessors. The 2.4-liter DOHC 16V delivered 160 hp, while the 3.0-liter V6 generated 240 hp. The fuel economy of the four-cylinder was impressive for the time, touching 35 mpg on the highway. Top-line models had a navigation radio. Post-2005, every Accord came with front side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. However, issues such as faulty automatic transmissions and defective CD players remained common.

Eighth generation (2008-2012)

The 2008 Accord had more interior room, better horsepower, and a longer wheelbase than its original counterpart. The EPA changed the status of this Accord from midsize to full size. The base model of the eighth generation Accord had a 177-hp 2.4-liter engine, while the 3.5-liter V6 delivered an impressive 272 hp. Some common issues with the eighth-generation Accord were excessive oil consumption and brake wear.

If you can push your budget a little, consider getting the ninth or tenth-generation Accord.

Ninth generation (2013-2017)

The coupe and sedan versions of the Accord made a comeback with the standard four-cylinder engine producing 180 hp. A new CVT automatic replaced the previous model’s five-speed automatic, and a six-speed manual continued to be optional. Advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control and Honda’s LaneWatch passenger-side camera system, first appeared on the 2013 Accord. The fuel economy of the CVT-equipped four-cylinder versions touched approximately 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. In 2014, Honda launched a new hybrid Accord focusing on fuel efficiency.

Tenth generation (2018-present)

In 2018, the Accord was fully redesigned and was offered only as a sedan. With a more sleek look and upscale interior, this new model came with two different turbocharged inline-four engines and offered excellent fuel economy and a fun driving experience. The Accord was available only with a manual transmission until 2020. If you want a car with automatic transmission, you’ll have to buy a recent model.

No matter the model, the Accord holds its value well!
