Buying a Pre-Owned Cadillac Escalade? This Is What You Need To Know

The legendary Cadillac Escalade is unbeatable if you want to buy a full-size American luxury SUV. Considering how long the Escalade has been around, there are many used ones to fit different budgets. If you plan to buy a pre-owned Escalade, here’s what you need to know.

First generation (1999-2000)

This version of the Escalade was only in production between 1999 and 2000. The iteration had one base trim, and came with the option of rear-wheel or four-wheel-drive. A 5.7-liter V-8 engine with an output of 255 hp powered the Escalade. This version of the Escalade was quite a well-equipped, luxurious SUV for its time.

Second generation (2002-2006)

The base second-generation Escalade model came with a 5.3-liter V-8 engine, while the all-wheel-drive variant had the Vortec 6.0-liter V-8 that delivered 310 hp (in models launched between 2002 and 2003) or 345 hp (in models launched between 2004 and 2006). No matter which second-gen variant you choose, you get a four-speed automatic transmission. The interior of the second-gen Escalade looked pleasantly different from that of its predecessor.

Third generation (2007-2014)

This generation of the Escalade, available as rear or all-wheel-drive, came in the short-wheelbase standard format and long-wheelbase ESV and EXT pickup versions. A 6.2-liter V-8 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission powered most versions of the third-generation Escalade. Gas/electric hybrid variants are also based around a 6.0-liter V-8 and two 60 kW electric motors. Even in the current market, the big, brash, top-notch styling of the third-gen Escalade remains unmatched.

Fourth generation (2015-2020)

The exteriors of the fourth-gen Escalade scream Cadillac—bulky, brash, and bling. The same 6.2-liter EcoTec3 L86 V-8 engine, offering 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. torque, powered all the versions of the fourth generation Escalade. By 2018, the transmission had gone from a six-speed automatic to a ten-speed automatic.

Fifth generation (2021-present)

The 2021 model of the Escalade underwent a complete redesign, making it bigger and more luxurious. The new model features more cargo room, latest technology like Super Cruise, and up to five screens inside the cabin. It also comes with a diesel engine, an available air suspension, and an independent rear suspension setup.

Although the fuel economy of the Escalade isn’t the best in the market, the vehicle is a good option if you want a luxury SUV.
