A Buyer’s Guide to the Ram 1500

After its previous extensive redesign, this year’s Ram 1500 has had just minor updates. A new and improved version of the truck’s turbodiesel V6 engine has been introduced, increasing power to 260 horsepower and torque to 480 lb-ft. The 48-volt hybrid assist system is available with the 3.6-liter V6 (305 hp) and the 5.7-liter V8 (395 hp) gas engines (standard on the V6, optional on the V8). Every model has a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Ram’s coil spring rear suspension (for a smoother-than-average ride) and optional air ride system stand out, and its luxurious cabin is a highlight of the higher-end trims. It’s limited to only two four-door body styles (the Quad Cab and the Crew Cab) and a choice between two lengths of bed, but there are seven distinct trims to choose from, and it has a maximum towing capacity of 12,750 pounds.

Rams with regular cabs are still on sale, but they are now known as the Ram Classic, and they are based on the platform from the previous generation.

The Ram 1500 is the most refined vehicle in its class. The company has done its research and chosen the industry standards for both design and packaging, so every Ram has the tools it needs for work and pleasure. eTorque mild hybrid drivetrains are also noteworthy for their smoothness and efficiency. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is particularly appealing because of its low noise level, its capacity to save gasoline, and the ease it brings to towing.

Crew cab variants of the Ram include a 5.7- or 6.4-foot bed, while Quad cabs can only have the longer bed (which offers 61.5 cu-ft of cargo space). The 1500 can carry up to 2,329 pounds, and it can tow up to 12,750 pounds with the right accessories.

The Ram offers front passengers 40.9 inches of legroom, while those in the back may stretch out in either 35.6 inches (Quad) or 45.2 inches (Crew).

The Ram 1500 comes standard with a variety of high-tech conveniences, including a 5-inch infotainment system, push-button ignition, Wi-Fi, a radio with six speakers, and Bluetooth. An 8.4-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, a bigger 12-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker Alpine stereo, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and satellite radio are all available on higher model levels.
